Periodontal disease begins with bacteria that builds up in the mouth. In its early stages soft plaque, if brushed daily, slows further progression.
If plaque builds up and becomes a hard calculi or tarter that sticks to the tooth, gingivitis quickly follows. This can be quite painful and cause bad breath. Gingivitis allows bacteria to enter the bloodstream and may cause infections in organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart and lungs. Even in early stages of periodontal disease, treatment is warranted. If taken care of early we can help prevent bone loss, tooth loss, pain, bad breath and may even extend your pet’s lifespan.
